If you are visiting the island of Madeira, then hiking from Pico do Ariero to Pico Ruivo should definitely be on your itinerary. This is the most popular hiking route on Madeira and it features steep staircases and narrow paths that overlook sheer drops. Pico Ruivo is the highest mountain in Madeira. I'd be lying if I said the hike was easy, but it was worth the incredible mountain views. Here's everything you need to know before hiking from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo.

How long is the hike from Pico do Ariero to Pico Ruivo ?

The hike from Pico do Ariero to Pico Ruivo is around 6 miles long and takes around 4 hours to complete.

How to get to Pico do Ariero from Funchal?

I wanted to walk the route myself rather than with a tour group, but I didn't hire a car when I visited Madeira. I booked a transfer service with a company called Pico Transfers. Our driver picked us up from our hotel in Funchal in the morning and dropped us off at Pico do Arieiro in time for the sunrise. Our driver was very informative and gave us helpful tips before starting the hike. 5 hours later our driver picked us up from Pico Ruivo and dropped us back to our hotel. Or you could book a tour (LINK TOUR).

Is Pico do Ariero to Pico Ruivo safe?

The route often overlooks sheer drops but the paths are very well maintained and there is a hand rail to hold on to through the majority of the hike. It is important to check the weather before your hike as it can be dangerous in wet and stormy conditions.

What should you wear when hiking Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo?

I hiked this route in September when temperatures were around 24/25°C. When I arrived for sunrise it was quite cold and windy, but a few hours into the hike it became quite warm. Especially after all the steps! For this reason I would recommend you wear layers that keep you warm in the morning which you can remove if you get warm later on. A light rain jacket is a good idea in case the weather changes and sensible walking shoes are essential.

What should you bring on the hike?

It is important to take lots of water and some food too. There is a small shop/cafe at Pico Ruivo but it can be expensive. They took card payments though. If you would like to use the toilets at Pico Ruivo, then make sure you take some coins! Don't forget your camera because the views are amazing.

What time should I hike Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo?

I chose to watch the sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, it was amazing to sit above the clouds and watch the sun appear over the clouds. The other bonus about going early is that the paths are quieter and you finish the hike when the warmest part of the day arrives.
